High Blood and Low Blood Questions

High Blood and Low Blood Questions

1. My blood pressure is 140 over 90. Can it be considered high blood pressure? What should I do?

Answer: The blood pressure of 140 over 90 is about to become high blood. We call it borderline high blood pressure. First, we need to monitor your blood pressure closely. Find out if it is always 140 over 90. Is your BP lowering to normal or even increasing to 140 over 90?

When your BP drops below normal (sometimes only 130 over 80) we can get it through lifestyle changes such as losing weight, reducing dietary salt, quitting smoking and reducing workload and problems.

But if your BP is always 140 over 90 or sometimes even higher this level will need to be checked by a doctor. Aside from the lifestyle changes mentioned, you may need to take maintenance medication because you already have high blood pressure.

Medications for borderline high blood pressure are losartan 50 mg tablets or lacidipine 4 mg tablets once a day. The effects of these drugs are mild and your blood pressure will drop by about 5 to 10 points. This is true of these types of "mild cases" of high blood pressure. See your doctor first.

2. My blood pressure is 90 over 60. Am I low blood?

Answer: Probably not. Many people have a blood pressure of 90 over 60 but this is normal for them. Most of them are women and feel nothing. In fact, this blood pressure is good. But there are some chances that 90 over 60 is low blood. If you have dizziness or weakness, consult a doctor. CBC or complete blood count can be checked to see if you are anemic or not. When the results of CBC and other laboratory tests are normal, it means that your blood pressure of 90 over 60 is normal.
