Do we want to live long? Of course, we want to! If so, we should be moving, When we exercise regularly, our heart, lungs, brain, intestines, bones, muscles and whole body will be in better shape.
Some health expert groups, including the Department of Health, the World Health Organization, and the UP-College of Human Kinetics, have issued exercise guidelines.
According to the advice from the Philippine National Guidelines on Physical Activity, here are the things to follow to stay safe while exercising:
1. First of all, before starting strenuous exercise, you should first consult a doctor to find out your health status. For senior citizens and the sick, first ask your doctor what type of exercise is right for you.
2. Start exercising slowly. For example, walk for 15 to 30 minutes and gradually raise your level. When you are out of breath, rest first.
3. Proper exercise is done 3 or 5 times a week only. Also give your body enough rest to heal and strengthen it.
4. When you exercise, if you feel dizzy, nauseous, tired or have chest pains, stop exercising and rest. See a doctor if necessary.
5. You will know that you are exercising too much when your muscles and joints hurt. If your breathing is also severe you should also stop.
6. Drink enough water before and while exercising. Drink a glass of water every 30 minutes of exercise. This is how much water is lost in our body when we are sweating.
7. Wear proper clothing while exercising. Wear a jacket if it is cold, or shorts if it is hot. Make sure your shoes are soft and durable, such as rubber shoes or walking shoes.
8. Choose a safe place while exercising. Be careful not to fall or have an accident while sweating.
9. After exercising let your body rest. Get dressed and drink water. Eating bananas and fruits also contain potassium which the body needs. Remember, proper exercise can help our health.
