Thyroid and Goiter, What is this?
The thyroid gland is located in front of our neck. It is next to Adam’s apple, that bulging bone in the middle of our neck. The thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and is usually invisible or excavated. The thyroid gland controls the movement of the organs of our body.
When our thyroid gland grows, it is called goiter or goiter. Hyperthyroidism is common in women. In fact 12.5% of women get thyroid disease.
There are two possible causes of thyroid gland disease: hyperthyroid (excess of thyroid hormones) or hypothyroid (lack of thyroid hormones).
Hyperthyroid: Fast Movement
When the patient is hyperthyroid, his metabolism speeds up. The heart beats fast, nine-nerves, always sweaty, always hot, and diarrhea. When it is severe, their eyes also glaze over. It is dangerous when not caught up.
To find out if you are hyperthyroid, check Free T3, Free T4 and TSH. It costs P800 in a cheap laboratory. When T3 and T4 levels are high, it means the patient is hyperthyroid.
Hyperthyroid is easy to treat. Methimazole (brand name Tapazole) is given 5 mg, from 2 to 4 tablets a day. Taking the drug for about 1 year or more. Consult an endocrinologist or thyroid specialist.
Hypothyroid: Slow Motion
On the other hand, there are hypothyroid patients. They feel the opposite. Their heartbeat is slow and they are always cold. They are also slow to move and think because they lack thyroid hormones. In hypothyroid patients, their T3 and T4 levels are low.
The treatment for hypothyroidism is simple. They only take Levothyroxine (Brand name Eltroxin) which fills the thyroid gland deficiency. Levothyroxine is usually taken for life.
Although it is easy to treat hyperthyroid and hypothyroid, the problem is that it is very difficult for a doctor to detect. The symptoms are strange and other diseases are mistaken. So my advice: have your Free T3, Free T4 and TSH checked. You may have thyroid disease.
